Organic USA Stops Importing Kaiyodo Revoltech Figures

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Organic USA is the company that has been distributing the Kaiyodo Revoltech line of figures in the U.S. I just got this email from them today:

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Good-day,

We would like to take the time to inform you that Organic Hobby, Inc will no longer be importing Kaiyodo’s product lines Revoltech, Fraulein, etc…, effective immediately. We would like to extend our sincerest apologies for all inconveniences that this might have caused your company/establishment. In addition, we would like to say that we feel terribly sorry about the non-release (cancellation) of the following items you pre-ordered:

1- Fraulein Revoltech #010 – Yoko.
2- Fraulein Revoltech #011 - Haruka.
3- Revoltech #062 - Tengen Toppa Gurren Langann.
4- Revoltech #063 - Ricky.

Please make a note of the changes (above) and make the necessary adjustments in your system.

This is quite a big shock because I have no idea what is going to happen to the Revoltech figures in the U.S. I know that Organic supplied all the other U.S. distributors with the Revoltech figures, so I’m not sure what will happen now. Also, we have most of the above figures on pre-order on our store and am not sure if these will be available now or not.

I just contacted Organic and got a response back as to why these figures were canceled. It turns out that Kaiyodo has been making some huge demands for minimum orders. Apparently they have been requiring orders of 30,000 pieces for each Revoltech figure. With minium order quantities like that I can’t blame Organic because there is no way they’d be able to sell that many units of each figure in the U.S., especially with the current state of the economy.

I’m hoping that one of the other U.S. distributors will pickup the Revoltech distribution, but if Kaiyodo maintains the same minimum order, the outlook might be quite dismal and we may not see Revoltech figures in the U.S. for some time.

UPDATE

We have just gotten word that another distributor will be distributing these in the U.S., but at slightly higher prices. We don’t have pricing information yet, but as soon as we do, the affected Revoltech figures will be re-solicited.

Ikki Tousen Ryoumou Shimei 60cm Tall Doll by UART

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

UART (The United Arts of Real Toys) is releasing this massive 60cm (23.6″) tall Ryomou doll which they showcased at the 2008 San Diego Comic Con. According to the U.S. distributors this item will be of “premium availability” meaning that they will only manufacture enough to fill pre-orders and no more than that. Frankly, I don’t care how limited this thing is, I just can’t justify the $730 price tag.

First of all, this thing has an ugly sculpt. I’m not sure what they’re thinking with that sculpt (especially the chicken legs), but if I’m paying $730 for a doll, it better have an excellent sculpt. The outfit on the other hand does look quite gorgeous and very detailed. Still, with the U.S. economy in flux, I just can’t see $700+ figures selling all that well (or at all). Still, if anyone is interested in these, please let me know by October 15th. Pre-order for this item MUST be pre-paid.

I have had enough of tasteless fan-service figures

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

When I first started Twin Moons Anime back in 2001, it started with my love for Robotech. That was when ADV started releasing Robotech on DVD and when Toynami announced the release of their Masterpiece line of Robotech veritechs. I was in heaven! I had waited so many years for these and now they were finally coming. So I decided to start the business as a hobby hoping that it would make enough money to support my own addiction to the toys.

Surprisingly things took off from there as customers requested other products to be added to the store, and slowly but surely the hobby turned into a full-time business. But along the way, I’ve also come to many crossroads where I’ve had to re-analyze my reasons for starting the business and the direction I want it to take.

As of late there have been some disturbing trends that I’ve fallen victim to for some time and has been bothering me, namely the ever-increasing number of tasteless fan-service figures being released by just about all the toy manufacturers. Only a few years ago, reputable companies like Yamato, Alter, Good Smile Company and Max Factory were mainly making very high quality, well-sculpted anime figures. But as of late there is a new trend to produce custom statues from various Japanese sculptors that in my opinion lean towards tastelessness.
